Christmas is over, January is behind us, resolutions are left bereft by the wayside, and (at least for us) booze and junk food are back on the agenda. And what better way to celebrate this than a deep dive into consumerism and the campaigns that made us stop and take notice. From using current events to sell holidays, to using what your customers are already doing to your benefit. Here’s what we have been loving this January.
If you are as perpetually online as we are, then you may be aware of a feud between a very famous family. In the grand scheme of things, this little fracas may be low down on the list of important things happening in the world right now, so when we saw a brand taking a tongue-in-cheek approach to the whole situation, it caught our eye immediately.
On the Beach has gone all in on this viral moment, getting to the heart of what keeps TikTok tic(to)king. Offering free cancellation for families with a new family fallout perk, paired with a bold image of Brooklyn embossed on a torn ticket, is a clever way to use what people are already talking about to promote your brand. It is a strong reminder that understanding audience behaviour is at the heart of effective demand generation.

From a brand that trots out old tropes more often than Grimace gave us all nightmares, McDonald’s has brought out a few new menu items, with a twist… This time, we did the work for them. From the delicious, if not unnecessary, way to start your day with the espresso milkshake, to the fast-food take on a classic in the Surf N’ Turf burger, McDonald’s has created something genuinely impressive.
A marketing campaign that resonates with customers, gives a cheeky wink and a sense of validation to those who inspired the dishes, and creates an opportunity for people online to create advertising for them. Why pay an influencer to try your Apple Pie McFlurry when Steve from Bracknell has already made 20 reels about it?
This is all before we even mention that the blacked-out branding and titles, with a bar struck through them, are visually striking and easily grab attention. It certainly made us take notice… and get a few pots of Big Mac sauce. Campaigns like this show how digital marketing, when done well, can turn audiences into advocates.

Have you ever been at a coffee shop or restaurant and been utterly lost in the menu? Well, a pop-up in London certainly has felt the same way, as it has a bold proposition for coffee aficionados: get a flat white, or f*ck off.
The name alone is enough to gain media attention, as well as the attention of coffee lovers and podcast bros throughout the country, and that level of attention is hard to ignore. Combined with a black and white colour scheme and a bold font, this is a brand pushing boundaries.
Brands that choose to be bold, be striking, and be recognisable have the distinct advantage of being seen as “cool”, and with this comes the added benefit of selling merch. Let’s face it, it is unlikely you will see someone marching down the street with a Caffè Nero cap, but one that tells others to f*ck off? Absolutely.
Also, let’s be honest, there is not much difference between a latte and a cappuccino, so maybe we should all just get a flat white, or f*ck off.
